Answer Block (featured snippet): How to Get There

Glossary 2 min read Updated 29.09.2026
Four block formats and how to write for each, five steps to increase chances, and the downside: sometimes the block answers so thoroughly that there’s no need to click through.

Answer Block (featured snippet, "zero position") is a fragment of a page that search displays above the results as a direct answer to a question. It is still a link to your site, so getting there provides a noticeable increase in clicks.

Types of Blocks

FormatWhen It AppearsHow to Write for It
ParagraphQuestions like "what is", "why"Definition in 40–60 words immediately after the subheading
Numbered ListQuestions like "how to do"Step-by-step instructions with short points
Bullet ListEnumerations, collectionsHomogeneous points of equal length
TableComparisons, prices, characteristicsSimple table without merged cells

How to Increase Chances

  1. Find question queries for which you are already in the top 10: the block almost always comes from the first ten.
  2. Put the question as a subheading exactly in the wording it is asked.
  3. Answer immediately below it — briefly and conclusively, without introduction.
  4. Provide format according to the type of question: steps — in a list, comparison — in a table.
  5. Check after two to three weeks for impressions and click-through rates for this query.
Downside
Sometimes the block answers the question so thoroughly that there’s no need to visit the site — and clicks drop even as impressions rise. For informational queries, this is a normal price for visibility; for commercial ones, check that you’re not giving away the main value for free.

How This Relates to Everything Else

The same technique — a direct answer at the beginning — works for AI summaries and simply for the reader: they see the answer immediately, rather than after three paragraphs of introduction. We maintain this rule throughout the knowledge base, and it is also highlighted in the article recommendation on optimizing articles for queries.

How Blocks Are Lost

The block is not fixed forever: search reviews it with every update of the results. Most often, it is taken by a competitor who answered the same question shorter and more accurately. Less frequently, the block disappears altogether — if the algorithm decides that there is no definitive answer to the query.

Therefore, queries for which you hold a block should be tracked in a separate list: losing a block appears in reports as a sudden drop in clicks with unchanged position, and without this context, the reason is searched for months.

What Not to Do

There’s no need to rewrite the entire page for the block. One section with a direct answer at the beginning is sufficient: the rest of the text continues to work for regular ranking. Attempting to turn the entire article into a set of short answers worsens it for the reader and does not increase chances.

FAQ

Where does the answer block come from?
From pages that are already in the top 10 for that query: search selects the fragment that best answers the question.
How to increase the chances of getting into the block?
Put the question as a subheading in the exact wording it is asked, and provide a short complete answer in the required format: paragraph, list, or table.
Is it true that the block takes away clicks?
Sometimes: if the answer is complete, there’s no need to click through. For informational queries, this is the price for visibility; for commercial ones, check that you’re not giving away the main value for free.
